Eligible Events and Reporting

This page explains what may qualify as an eligible event and how members report an incident.

Eligible event examples and exclusions

Eligible or potentially eligible event types include:

  • Hit-and-run cases qualify as eligible events for members to submit a sharing request.
  • Loss of control and at-fault collisions are eligible events to submit a sharing request.
  • Most comprehensive types of damage by an animal, such as collision with a deer or a bear damaging a vehicle, are eligible events for submitting a sharing request.
  • Accident towing is included by the GDC Plan as part of the loss.
  • Parking fees after an incident are included for up to 5 days.

Exclusions and conditions include:

  • Stolen car keys are currently not within the scope of sharing request.
  • Prospective members must truthfully answer commercial usage questions before joining. During the sharing request process, a TPA or SIU may verify facts, including vehicle usage. Members who intentionally falsify this information will be rejected for sharing requests.

Members can submit a sharing request for accidents within 365 days of occurrence. Members have a duty to report accidents as soon as possible. If GDC cannot verify authenticity or actual loss because the member failed to report promptly, the sharing request will be rejected.

Eligible event reporting process

When an incident occurs, the first priority is safety. If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately.

Process:

  1. Check safety.
  2. Determine accident liability when possible.
  3. If caused by a third party, obtain the responsible party's insurance information and file a claim with their insurance company.
  4. If liability is unclear, contact GDC staff for assistance.
  5. Report the incident through the GDC App from Dashboard > Report Incident / Assistance.
  6. Provide accident details through the app.
  7. Upload photos of the accident scene and vehicle damage.
  8. Follow the app steps for assistance.
  9. GDC verifies eligibility.
  10. The vehicle is inspected, usually at one of the contracted body shops pre-selected by GDC.
  11. Repairs are authorized after damage assessment and member approval.
  12. A sharing request is submitted to GDC for public announcement and community sharing.
  13. After repair completion, the member is notified to pick up the vehicle.

For urgent situations or if the member does not have access to the app, the member can call +1 (833) 436-7771 to start the application. The phone call only starts the process. The request is officially submitted only after required steps and uploads are completed through the app or web link.

After the report is submitted, GDC assigns an auto damage specialist who contacts the member within one business day to review details, assess eligibility, and guide next steps.

Eligibility review and response timing

The contracted Third-Party Administrator, GDC professional, or a designated AI algorithm reviews information submitted through the member's sharing request and determines whether the loss details qualify as an Eligible Incident.

Damage assessment has two parts:

  • Initially, the vehicle owner applies for shared repair services and provides photos of the scene immediately after the incident.
  • Once the application is accepted, the owner takes the vehicle to an affiliated repair shop, where the shop takes more detailed damage photos. A professional assessor remotely evaluates the damage, and a loss adjuster verifies the assessment.

The TPA partner should make member contact on the same business day or next business day.

Auto Damage Specialist working hours are 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time. If an accident is reported outside working hours, the member should wait, and can consult customer service in the GDC App during that time.

Who or what vehicle is eligible during an incident

Only the registered vehicle is eligible for submitting a sharing request. GDC is not available when a planholder is driving a non-member friend's car.

If a friend is driving the member's registered car:

  • If the friend is listed in the plan, the request is eligible.
  • If the friend is not listed, the request can still be eligible only if the friend had explicit permission to drive the vehicle and does not reside at the same address as the member.
  • If the friend lives with the member, the friend should be added as a listed driver under the plan.

For a Temporary Rental Auto used while the planned auto is being repaired, the member may be eligible to submit a sharing request for loss of the rental auto if all required conditions are met:

  • The rental is for personal use only.
  • The rented vehicle is of a similar make and model to the planned auto.
  • The rental is in the member's name or the name of a driver authorized under the plan.
  • The rental is through a nationally recognized automobile rental agency.
  • The rental period does not exceed 30 days.
  • The incident occurs within the United States.

Sharing benefits for Temporary Rental Autos are limited to costs not covered by other available sources in the required order of precedence described in Transportation, roadside, rental, and travel.

Glass incidents

Auto glass damage generally falls into rock chip repair or glass replacement.

A rock chip may be repaired if the entire damaged area is smaller than a quarter and is not in the driver's line of vision. If the glass cannot be repaired, glass replacement may apply.

In general, costs are handled in this order:

  1. Member's Out-of-Pocket Amount.
  2. Member's Remaining Pledge Balance.
  3. Any remaining eligible amount through weekly sharing.

For eligible glass replacement, the OOP may be waived if the member selected the glass OOP waiver at enrollment. For eligible rock chip repairs, the OOP is waived automatically, whether or not the member selected the glass OOP waiver.

For glass-only incidents, the RPB may also be waived if the member selected the glass RPB waiver at enrollment.

The glass OOP waiver and glass RPB waiver apply only to glass-only damage. In Florida, South Carolina, and Kentucky, both are included by default at no extra cost when the vehicle is enrolled.

Outside of Florida, South Carolina, and Kentucky, members can add or remove the glass OOP waiver and glass RPB waiver after the plan becomes effective.

Renewal is not available if two or more eligible events occur during the effective period of the GDC Plan, excluding:

  • The first glass-only event during the member's current or most recent plan period.
  • Any repair-only glass event where the glass is repaired and not replaced.
